Extensions and cancellation of registration

Health extensions

If you have been granted an extension on the grounds of health, the length the extension will cover is the total length of the absence. For example, if you are absent for six weeks then you will have to complete a six-week extension.

You will be contracted to work to a maximum of 0.82 FTE with time for supporter meetings and Professional Learning.

On completion of the extension you will be required to submit an extension profile. More information about completing an extension in these circumstances can be obtained by contacting the Professional Learning and Development Department or from your local authority's Probation Manager.

Competency extensions

If your employer recommends an extension to your period of probation in order to give you more time to demonstrate that you have met the SFR you will be notified of that recommendation in writing. You can either accept the recommendation that has been made or notify GTCS within 14 days that you would like to challenge the recommendation. If you challenge the recommendation that has been made, a Fitness to Teach Panel Hearing will be arranged by GTCS' Regulation and Legal Services.

Please see the probationary service hearings for probationer's guidance leaflet for more information.

If you accept the recommendation that has been made or, if you challenge the recommendation and a Panel directs that an extension be applied to your registration, the length of the extension is normally 12 weeks or 14 weeks if completed via the flexible route. You will be contracted to work to a minimum of 0.9 FTE with time for supporter meetings and Professional Learning.

On completion of the extension you will be required to submit an extension profile. More information about completing an extension in these circumstances can be obtained from the Professional Learning and Development Department or from your local authority's Probation Manager.

Cancellation of registration

If your final profile contains a recommendation from your employer that your provisional registration should be cancelled, Regulation and Legal Services will write to ask you if you wish to challenge this recommendation.

Your employer will have completed a Case Overview Report to support their recommendation and this will be sent to you together with a form for you to fill in to indicate whether or not you wish to challenge the recommendation.

You must reply to us within 14 days and if you decide to challenge the recommendation, a Probationary Service Hearing will be arranged by Regulation and Legal Services.

Please see the probationary service hearings for probationer's guidance leaflet for more information.
